The author who wants to write novels about places he has never lived makes his life more complicated: he is forced to do much longer documentation and setting work. I could write stories about high schoolers from the 80s: I lived them and they would almost be autobiographical stories. I could write a novel set in the Rome of the 2000s, where I lived. But those would be stories that would bore me to death. As I have specified several times, I need to escape when I read and write , I need to be elsewhere.
Abroad and historical eras as an escape from reality Those who, like me, feel this need, those who feel alien to the reality in which they were born and live, then do not have many alternatives available: write stories set abroad write stories set in other historical eras of your country In the second case they are historical novels and then the writer needs in-depth Special Data historical research on the period he wants to write about. In the first case the question becomes a little more complex, and I realized this the hard way during my (much infamous) science fiction novel, which is made up of 6 stories connected to each other and set in as many different times and places.
One of the stories is set in 17th century China and while I was writing – after having done some research – I said to myself: I don't know how the Chinese speak in general and how 17th century Chinese society was structured, how the people, etc. Thinking about this, I arrived at a solution. It is not always possible to visit the places of our stories There are Italian authors who write novels set in the United States. They certainly can't take constant trips overseas to learn as much as they can about U.S. society. The costs would be unsustainable. But they wouldn't be sustainable even if it were a European capital: every weekend it would still require a few hundred euros to spend. I don't know about you, but I couldn't afford it.
